"Frank Owsley died in Winchester, England while serving on a Fulbright Scholarship. He earned a B.S. degree in 1911 in English and history and a M.S. degree in history in 1912 from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (later Auburn University) in Auburn, Alabama; a M.A. degree in history in 1917 and Ph.D. in 1924 from the University of Chicago. He served as Professor of history at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee, 1927- 1949; and at the University of Alabama, 1949-1951, and head of the department of history there, 1952-1955.

His published works include "King Cotton Diplomacy" (1931), co-author of "A Short History of the American People," volumes 1-2 (1945-1948), "Plain Folk of the Old South" (1949). A biography, "Frank Lawrence Owsley, Historian of the Old South, A Memoir" was published in 1990 by his widow."
