Her name was Charity Mahala DeHart. She was the daughter of Sarah Parmer and John DeHart. Mahala was a charter member of Dobyns Primitive Baptist Church in 1911.
She was a midwife and delivered babies for miles around in the community of Rye Cove. She would cook stacks of fried pies and all sorts of goodies for the company they had according to her granddaughter. There were eleven children born only a year or so apart; she would count them each night to make sure they were all there.
