Lyman came as a child to Leeds County with his family in about 1802. His father, William, of German origin, came from Connecticut and settled in Bastard Township near Plum Hollow, Ontario. William served in the Revolutionary War before moving to Canada.

In 1818, Lyman purchased all two hundred acres of Lot 7, Concession VI of Bastard Township and married Sally.
