Julia Lou Hauze was the daughter of Hannah Hauze and Charles Hamilton. It is not known if her parents were married. Hannah later married Matthew O'Brien and moved to Iowa. For much of Julia's early life she was raised in the household of her grandparents, John and Phoebe Rittenhouse Hauze, in Black Creek, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, and at some point she took their name. She also spent time during her later teen years after the death of her grandmother with her Rittenhouse relatives in the Germantown area near Philadelphia.
Julia was married in Wilkes Barre by the Rev J Richard Boyle, Methodist Minister, to Daniel Asa Smith. They lived for a time in Hazleton before moving to Catasauqua, Pennsylvania. There they lived in their home at 728 Walnut Street for many years. Julia died in 1943 and was buried in Fairview Cemetery.
