Elizabeth (Betsy Mae) Purdy was born in Landgrove, Vermont, on September 16, 1827, the daughter of Isham Purdy and Roxcea Wiley Purdy. In the 1850 census Elizabeth is living with the family of William Bradley, a neighbor family to the Barrow families. She married Claiborne Barrow (March 8, 1822-October 31, 1877) on April 22, 1851, and they had seven children:
1) Huldah Barrow, born December 29, 1851 in Carbondale, Illinois. She married George Van Zandt on October 25, 1874, in Jackson County, Illinois. She died December 28, 1880, in Chicago, Illinois, and is buried at Graceland Cemetery in Chicago.
2) Herbert Barrow, born March 7, 1854 in Carbondale, Illinois. He died July 3, 1855 in Carbondale.
3) Elbert Barrow, born January 19, 1857 in Carbondale, Illinois. He married Elizabeth Brown in 1893. He died June 1, 1950 in Carbondale.
4) Charles Dennis Barrow, born April 2, 1858, in Carbondale, Illinois. He died July 28, 1871, in Carbondale.
5) Ella Bell Barrow, born March 25, 1860 in Carbondale, Illinois. She died sometime after 1910, in Elgin, Illinois. In the later census' 1900-1930, Ella is listed as a patient in the Elginsville Hospital, or Northern Illinois Hospital for the Insane.
6) Edwin E. Barrow, born February 20, 1863 in Carbondale, Illinois. He married Alice Hartwell on June 4, 1890, in Denver, Colorado. He died January 26, 1952 in Salt Lake City, Utah, and was buried January 29, 1952 in Forest Lawn, Los Angeles, Orange County, California.
7) Lucy P. Barrow, born September 11, 1865 in Carbondale, Illinois. She died October 14, 1938, in Jackson County, Illinois.

In the 1860 census Claiborne and Betsy were in Carbondale (for some reason she was listed as Rachel) with Huldah, born in 1851, Elbert, 1857, Charles, 1858, and Ellen, 1859. Two more children were born in the 1860s--Eddie, in 1863, and Lucy, 1866. Betsy Purdy Barrow died in 1869, leaving six children, three of them under ten years of age. Her parents Isham and Roxcea (Wiley) Purdy had raised nine children (one more had died in childhood) and all of them had left home. They were both about seventy when they moved to Carbondale, and presumably they lived with their son-in-law to help take care of the children. Barrow had at this time two forty-acre tracts of farmland and was probably living on one of them. They were the southeast quarter of the southeast quarter of Section 9, and the northwest quarter of the northwest quarter of Section 15, which cornered on it. He owned also a lot in Woodlawn Cemetery but the only two marked graves on it are those for Betsy's parents. Roxcea died in 1874 and Isham Purdy in 1881. He survived his son-in-law Claiborne Barrow, who died on October 31, 1877, and who is presumably buried on the farm with Betsy.
