Betty was raised as a catholic in Dover, NH, as her adoptive father Leon was one. Betty in later years she was able to connect with her natural birth mother who had her out of wedlock. Her birth mother was Grace Ann Butler 1928-1999 who married in 1948 to Wilfred Arthur Biron 1926-2008. Grace was a friend of the family and grew up in Milton, NH as a young girl, living on the same street as Effie's mother.
