Caledonia Edens, age 3, her mother, and her sister were among the ten women and children killed when a band of Indians attacked the Edens home on San Pedro Creek near the present day town of Augusta on the night of Oct 18, 1838. Two other women were seriously wounded but survived. The four men who were present escaped unharmed. Most of the husbands/fathers had not yet returned after fighting the Kickapoos on Oct 16, just two days before the attack on those gathered for safety at John Edens' home. Caledonia was the daughter of Mr & Mrs John Edens, her father being one who escaped from the house unharmed. This attack became known as "The Edens-Madden Massacre".
