A life-long resident of this county, Mr. Kersey taught in country schools for twelve years and in 1912 was elected county assessor, serving in that capacity for six years. In 1918 he was elected county collector and held the office for two terms, eight years. In 1929, he began farming west of the city and built a home on Highway 61 near Canaday Switch.
In June 1909 he and Mrs. Kersey became member of the Baptist Church and he was active in church work as long as his health permitted. He helped in the building of Temple Baptist Church although his membership was in First Baptist. In 1959 he was named an honorary trustee of the Boys Scouts of America.
His funeral was held Saturday afternoon December 29, in First Baptist Church with the Rev. Richard Adams of Portageville and Rev. Paul Currie officiated. Burial was in Little Prairie Cemetery with Dean Funeral Home service.
He leaves his wife, Mrs. Lillian Kersey of the home, a son and daughter, Alonzo P. Kersey Jr. and Mrs. Lorene Mehrle, a sister, Mrs. Clara Bruce, all of Caruthersville; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
