The funeral for John Marshall Highfill, 88, will be 10 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church, Cherokee. The Rev. Tom Cooksey will officiate. Burial will be in Cherokee Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are by Lanman Funeral Home Inc., Cherokee. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
He was born Oct. 22, 1917, to Alfred Bennett and Dora Irene Nichols Highfill and died Sunday, July 16, 2006, in Fairview.
He graduated from Lambert High School in 1935 and served in Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in California prior to his marriage to Evelyn Lavina Clark in 1939. They made their home on the family farm and in 1964 moved to the original farm site near Lambert. She died in 2000.
He lived in Alfalfa County farming and raising shorthorn cattle. He worked in Alfalfa County Assessor's Office for 10 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Cherokee where he taught Sunday school and served as an usher.
Following the death of his wife, he moved to Great Plains Care Center in Helena, and then moved to Fairview Fellowship Home.
Surviving are two daughters, Linda Lovelady of Ringwood and Carol Pierson of Houston; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Evelyn, he was preceded in death by three sisters and a granddaughter.
