Well Known Salem Woman Died Sunday
Mrs. Rebecca Hayward Hartnell Died Sunday Afternoon at Daughter's Home in Salem.
Death claimed a woman who had long been active in the community life of Salem on Sunday afternoon when Mrs. Rebecca Hayward Hartnell, 61, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lester M. Smith, in Salem, after a long illness. More than a year ago Mrs. Hartnell suffered a stroke of paralysis from which she had never fully recovered. She had a relapse several weeks ago from which she could not rally. The deceased was born March 13, 1862 in Newfoundland, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Hayward, living her early life in that country. She came to Kenosha county which she was fifteen years of age and had lived since that time in Salem. She was the widow of John A. Hartnell, who died fourteen years ago. Mrs. Hartnell had long been a member of the Methodist church of Salem and had been active in its work and in the general religious and social life of the community. Surviving the deceased are five daughters and one son: Mrs. Andrew Baker, Kenosha; Gilbert Hartnell, Kenosha; Mrs. Henry Oberst, Kenosha; Mrs. Herman Schultz, Mrs. Arthur Feldkamp and Mrs. Lester Smith, all of Salem. She is also survived by eleven grandchildren, two brothers, James and George Hayward of Kenosha, and two sisters, Mrs. George Axtell, of Kenosha and Mrs. Charles Duke, of Milwaukee. The funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at one-thirty at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Lester M. Smith, in Salem with services following at the Salem Methodist church at two o'clock. Interment will be made in the family plot in the Liberty Corners cemetery.
