Martha was the eldest of ten children born to Thomas Burrows and Mary Capers. She was bapitized a member of the L.D.S. Church at an early age. Martha gained a strong testimony of the Gospel and looked forward to the time when she would join the Saints in the Valley of the Mountains. This great desire was realized April 29, 1865, when she boarded the ship Belle Wood in Liverpool, England. The ship arrived in New York, New York on 31 May 1865. Alone, but unafraid, Martha faced the future courageously. Her future husband, Charles Barber Taylor, was returning to American on the same ship after completing a three year mission in England.

Martha married Charles on October 13, 1866, in the Endowment House, Salt Lake, Utah, by Heber C. Kimball.
To Charles and Martha were born eight children; of which five died. Charles Barber(Diphtheria), James Henry, Sarah Harriet(Evans), Mary Elizabeth (Inflam Lungs), Fannie May (Woodard), Joseph Burrows (Inflam bran), Hyrum Burrows (Infram bran), and Annie Isabelle (Heart disease). The five deceased children are all buried in Plat G, Block 10, Lot 9; no headstones found.
