John Brainerd was the seventh of nine children born to Hon. Hezekiah Brainerd and Dorothy (Hobart) Mason. He graduated from Yale in 1746 where he studied theology. He was a Presbyterian. John became a missionary to the Indians following his famous brother, David Brainerd.
John Brainerd married twice. First, to Experience Lion on Nov. 1, 1752. To this union were born three children:
1. Sophia Brainerd, b. Aug. 11, 1753 d. Sept. 8, 1758
2. Mary Brainerd B. July 18, 1755 m. Dr. John Ross.They had 4 children: Sophia, John, Elizabeth and Alexander.
3. David Brainerd b. Ap. 11, 1757 d. Sept. 11, 1758
His wife, Experience, died less than eighteen months after the birth of their last child.
John married Mrs. Elizabeth Price in 1766. They had no children. She died Aug. 28, 1788.
