When he had enlisted, he spurned the connections his father had, which would have produce an officers commission for him, and enlisted as a Private. He rose to Sergeant before being killed in combat.
Buried in France, his family erected a cenotaph for him in their plot in West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.
