Stephen Smith Leighty, Jr. was born in Fayette Co PA; his parents were Stephen Smith, Sr. and Eliza (Hudson) Leighty. Stephen Jr. and Nancy Harper were married 13 Nov 1872 in Hillsborough, Paint twp, Somerset Co, PA. They migrated to KS between Jan. 1881 and May 1884. A family portrait and bio appear in A Biographical History of Central Kansas, 1902.

Obituary from THE HUTCHINSON NEWS, Tues, Apr 3, 1928, pg 14: Stephen S. Leighty, 75 years, died last night at his home 100 Eleventh Ave. East. Funeral services will be held from the Congregational church at 10:30 on Thursday morning and burial will be in the HARMONY cemetery.
Mr. Leighty was a native of Fayette County, Penn. He came to Reno county in 1882 settling in Lincoln township where he became one of the leaders in the community affairs. he was one of the organizers and first president of the Darlow Livestock and Grain exchange and also helped to organize the Darlow Telephone exchange. since coming to Hutchinson he has been interested in civic affairs and was a member of the Congregational church serving many years on the official board.
He is survived by three sons; Harper Leighty of Darlow, Stephen S. Leighty of Ulysses and Clyde Leighty of Dodge City and by two daughters, Mrs. Sabina White of Mulvane and Miss Alice Leighty of the home address, seventeen grandchildren, two great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Todd of Wichita and Mrs. Lyda Woodard, of Wooster, O, and two brothrsm Frank eighty of Connellsville, PA, and John Leighty of Little Washington, Penn.
