Charles was born in New Hampshire, the son of Josiah and Mehetable (Jones) Barton. His first wife was Margaret Marston, by whom he fathered a son, Charles. His second wife was Sarah Nichols. His third wife was Olive who is buried beside him. He can be found in the 1840 U.S. Census for Pokagon, Calhoun County, Michigan. Land records for the area place him there no later than 1836. The family removed to Ross Township, Lake County, Indiana in 1848 and can be found in the 1850 U.S. Census where the occupation of Charles is reported as a shoemaker. The 1860 census reports that Charles was a farmer.

Children of Charles and Olive include: Sarah, William, Hiram, Maria, Francis and Adeline. All children, except Sarah who was born in New Hampshire, were born in Michigan.

Charles was also a Methodist Episcopal preacher in the Centerville, (now Merrillville) area.
