Rev. Msgr. Michael J. Alliegro was born in Brooklyn, New York on Jan. 24, 1947. He attended Our Lady of Peace School in Fords and Mother of Our Savior Seminary High School in Blackwood, N.J. He was ordained a priest by the Most Reverend George W. Ahr at St. Mary's Cathedral in Trenton on May 19, 1973. After ordination, Msgr. Alliegro, a well-known figure in Central Jersey served as associate pastor of Our Lady of Peace Parish in Fords from 1973-1974, later he was appointed principal of St. Thomas Aquinas High School (now Bishop George Ahr High School) in Edison from 1976 to 1980. Msgr. Alliegro also called to serve as secretary to then-Bishop Theodore E. McCarrick for the new Diocese of Metuchen in November 1981. He became the associate director of vocations in December 1985 and two years later was appointed diocesan vicar for pastoral life by the-Bishop Hughes. He served in that capacity for 12 years. Later on, he became administrator of St. Elizabeth/St. Brigid parishes in Far Hills and Peapack in 1983-1984. After being an administrator then bishop of Metuchen, Bishop Theodore McCarrick appointed him pastor of St. Joseph's Church in Bound Brook from 1984 to 1990/ Bishop Theodore Hughes' appointed him pastor of St. Batholomew's Church in East Brunswick from 1990 to 2007, where on October 8, 1993, he was named a Prelate of Honor, with the title Monsignor, by the Servant of God, Pope John Paul II. Then on November 1, 2007 Bishop Paul Bootkowski appointed him as Rector of Saint Francis of Assisi Cathedral in Metuchen where he would remain till his death. as a administrator and a pastor, Msgr. Alliegro was the executive director for the Diocese of Metuchen's Department of Worship and Liturgical Formation. He died at St. Peter's University Hospital on the morning of August 17th 2009 after a long 10 year battle with Leukemia. Eternal Rest grant upon Msgr. Alliegro oh lord and may perpetual light shine upon him! MAY HE REST IN PEACE! May his soul and all the souls of the faithful departed rest in peace... May he now be seated at the bosom of Abraham...
