WALTER F. DAVIDS
Walter F. Davids, probably the oldest yachtsman on Long Island Sound, and one of the early instructors of C. Oliver Iselin, died yesterday at the Masonic Home, at Utica. Mr. Davids, was at one time wealthy, having owned a large sealing wax factory, which had contracts for supplying the United States government. Her served as an alderman and tax receiver of New Rochelle.
In the 70's, Mr. Davids owned a speedy sailboat, which he thought so much of that he gave her his own name. Mr. Iselin, who was then a youth of twenty, had just bought a crack catboat, which he called the Dare Devil and Mr. Davids showed him how to sail her. The young yachtsman soon became such an expert skipper that he challenged his instructor to a series of races. The boats were backed at $500 a side, and on the day the races were sailed the interest was so intense that hundreds of yachtsmen when to New Rochelle to witness them. Mr. Iselin won.
Mr. Davids was one of the charter members of the New Rochelle Yacht Club. He leaves a wife and family.
