JONES, JOE A.
Joe A. Jones, cashier of the Bank of Somerville, Somerville, Texas, is one of the up-to-date, enterprising and progressive young men of his town, active in both its social and business circles. Mr. Jones is a native of Winona, Mississippi, born August 24, 1872, son of William C. and Delila (Armstrong) Jones, the latter a native of Mississippi and the former of Alabama. The year following his birth his parents moved to Texas, and in this state his father was for a number of years engaged in farming and stock-raising. They are now living retired in Haskell, Texas, at this writing the father being eighty-three years of age, and the mother seventy-two. Their six children, in order of birth, are as follows: Jesse L., John F., J. Ed., Jud S., Ethel, wife of Thomas B. Russell, and Joe A.
Joe A. passed his boyhood days on his father's ranch, assisting in the care of the cattle and doing other work that falls to the lot of the farmer boy on the frontier farm. He received his education in the public school of Haskell, and at the age of nineteen found employment as deputy in the office of the county clerk, a position he filled three years. After this he was for a time occupied as bookkeeper in the Haskell National Bank and following this experience, he alternated banking and traveling. From 1896 to 1900 he was the traveling representative of the Texas Printing Company, of Fort Worth, and for two years, from the fall of 1901 to the fall of 1903, he traveled for the stationery firm of Clark & Courts, of Galveston. In the meantime, he was for several months cashier in the First National Bank of Mineral Wells. After severing his connection with the Galveston firm, he accepted the position of cashier for R. E. Stafford & Company, bankers at Columbus. That was in January, 1905. Since August of that year he has occupied his present position as cashier in the Bank of Somerville. Mr. Jones is also secretary and treasurer of the Somerville Development & Improvement Company, a mining industry, with deposits and mill near Somerville. This concern is financed by Houston capital and is the lessor of the plant of the Fullers Earth Company of Houston.
In 1899 Mr. Jones married Miss Ethel Erwin, daughter of James Jefferson Erwin, of Ballenger, Texas, and they have a daughter, Allene.
While not what is termed a politician, Mr. Jones takes a commend able interest in politics, especially local affairs, and casts his franchise with the Democratic party. He is secretary of the Somerville School Board and president of the Citizens' Progressive League.
Fraternally he is a Mason. He has advanced through the degrees of that ancient order up to and including those of the Commandery, and has membership in Lee Scott Lodge, No. 793, A. F. & A. M.; Somerville Chapter, No. 288, R. A. M., and Brenham Commandery, No. 15, K. T. Also he is a member of Brenham Lodge, No. 979, B. P. O. E., and Mineral Wells Camp, No. 703, W. O. W. He is a Presbyterian and an elder in the church. (Historical Review of South-East Texas and the Founders, Leaders and Representative Men, Vol 2, by Dermot Hardy and Maj. Ingham S. Robert, by The Lewis Publishing Company, Chicago, 1910
