Mr. Couch was born in Coleman County, Texas and moved to Haskell with his parents in 1892.
John A. Couch married Miss Zoodie Johnson in June 1900 at Haskell, Texas.
As a young man, Couch taught school, in 1908, he began working for R.B. Spencer Lumber Company in Haskell. He was manager and co-owner fo the Lumber Company until his retirement in 1955. His extensive business interests included banking, farming and ranching. Couch was a member of the school board for 22 years. He was trustee of Hardin-Simmons University of Abilene for six years. He was county chair of the Haskell County Democratic Executive Committee for 18 years. Couch served three terms as president of the Haskell Chamber of Commerce and was mayor of Haskell from 1944-1948. He helped organize the Bob Baskin Dam Association of the Brazos River. He was president of Haskell County Veterans Vocational School since it was organized in 1946.
Couch was a member of the First Baptist Church since boyhood and was a deacon of the church for many years.
Survived by his wife; one daughter - Mrs. Edward Burleson; one brother - R.C. Couch, Sr; two sisters - Mrs. Mattie Roberts and Mrs. Allie Reeves; one grandson; one granddaughter, nieces and nephews.
