The Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers (1910) indicates that George, listed as Timon Dolson, enlisted on October 3, 1864, as a new recruit in Company G of the 21st Iowa Volunteer Infantry, a regiment that had been mustered in on September 9, 1862. He was mustered in on October 12, 1864, and then went south to join the regiment. The regiment was mustered out on July 15, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana, but George and other recruits still had time to serve and were transferred on July 12th as unassigned recruits in a 34th/38th Consolidated regiment. On July 14th orders were given for them to board a transport and they soon left for Galveston, Texas. The government soon realized their service was no longer needed and on August 15, 1865, they were mustered out at Houston, Texas.
