Tom Comstock was born to Ephraim F. H. Comstock and his third wife Nancy Goodman, probably in Perry County, Tennessee, since his parents are found there in 1840 and his widowed mother in 1850.

The Comstock siblings moved to McDonald County, Missouri about 1853 and that is likely where he married Miranda Jane Brown, 17 May 1859. The marriage records of that county were destroyed during the Civil War, but the date has been preserved in family records.

Tom Comstock served in the Civil War, Company D of the 6th Missouri Cavalry, CSA. This regiment became the 11th. Tom was likely one of those soldiers that served with various units - he was with Col. Shelby's forces when they came from Texas for their last unsuccessful push into Missouri.

There were two other children who died young and their grave sites are unknown. A son, Theodore, was born 12 Dec 1861, and died 1 Mar 1862, probably in McDonald County. Another son, Green Comstock was born and died during the few years the family lived in Lamar County, Texas, after the Civil War - he was born 22 Jan 1868 and died six days later on the 28th.

By 1870, Tom's family had settled on their homestead in Crawford County, Arkansas. For a brief time the location was called Barcelona and Tom served as postmaster in 1888 - no town ever really developed. The Crawford Cemetery is on what was the Comstock homestead.

Tom Comstock was elected to the Arkansas State Senate in 1882. The same year, he helped charter the Uniontown Masonic Lodge.
