Robert Lee Brown Jr of Virginia Beach, VA, was born in Norfolk, VA and was a 1975 graduate of Bayside High School, Virginia Beach, VA where he was an active member of the Vocal Music Department. Robert had devout faith in God. He was baptized at an early age at Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA where he served as pianist and director for Vacation Bible School, Sunday School and Children's Choirs. He also served as musician for the Virginia Baptist State Convention Retreat. Robert served as Choral Director for First Baptist Church, Mahan Street, Suffolk, VA, First Baptist Church, Logan Park and First Baptist Church, Lambert's Point, Norfolk, VA. He was the Choral Director for the Unitarian Church of Norfolk.

Robert later attended Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA. His gift of music touched the lives of many. He was employed with Norfolk Public Schools for many years as the accompanist at Granby High School. He was a faculty member in the Governor's School for the Arts since its inception. He served as the choral director, principal coach and accompanist for the department. A great musician, Robert was trained in piano and voice techniques at Norfolk State University and Virginia Commonwealth University. He was a member of the Virginia Opera Chorus for six seasons, and made his solo debut with the company as Schmidt in Andrea Chenier in the 2003 season. For the last two years, he conducted the chorus in Handel's Messiah.

Robert's love and passion for the Arts was evident in the many lives he touched through the gift of music. He was employed with Norfolk Public Schools for many years as the accompanist at Granby High School. He was a faculty member of the Governor's School for the Arts since its inception in 1986 where he served as the Choral Director, Principal Coach and Accompanist in the Department. Robert was in the business of making "Stars," always pushing his students to be the best and becoming accomplished musicians. Robert's students have gone on to study at many ivy league schools such as: Mannes School of Music, The Hartt School of Music, Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music, Carnegie Mellon University, New England Conservatory of Music, North Carolina School of the Arts, Indiana University School of Music, Yale University School of Music, Shenandoah University, George Mason University, Oklahoma City University and Wheaton College. His students have sung or are currently singing with the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago Lyric Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Gran Teatro Liceo de Barcelona, Wolftrap Opera Festival, Houston Grand Opera, Wexford Opera Festival, Virginia Opera, and Boston Lyric Opera Companies. Two of his students were winners of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions. Robert was a member of the Virginia Music Educators Association (VMEA) and Music Educators National Conference (MENC).

A servvice in celebration of the life of a man and his music was held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, August 25, 2009 at the Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA. Interment in the Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, VA.
