LaVerne Alton Painter, the sixth and youngest child of Emma Marie (née Beier) and Isaac Sherman Painter, was born on 17 June 1917 on the family's farm near Saint Louis, Gratiot County, Michigan. He was born nearly a decade after his next-older sibling.

LaVerne Painter and Miss Wilma Peterson were married on 29 July 1939 in Hastings, Barry County, Michigan. The groom, age 22, was a factory employee; the bride, age 18, was a student. The couple were enumerated in 1940 in her parents' household in Gratiot County. His draft registration card from that year indicates he was then employed at the Austin Company in Midland, Michigan.

LaVerne Painter was later employed by the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, and retired in 1979.

He died on 15 November 2001 in a hospital in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he was 84 years old. He was survived by his wife, their two sons, grandchildren, and a great-grandson.
