Civil War veteran and member of John Wesley Howell's Colorado river exploration. Powell's intent was to be the first to explore the Grand Canyon by river and he hired Seneca's brother Oramel G. Howland to map the river. On August 28, 1869, however, he, Oramel and William Dunn separated from the group while still in the canyon. Oramel G. Howland, according to Powell, stated that "it was madness to set out in this place" due to the upcoming rapids, falls and enclosed canyon walls. Powell and his remaining party safe navigated the river and emerged from the canyon two days later. The following month Powell received word that the three had been killed by Shivwit indians in Mohave County Arizona near Mt. Dellenbaugh. In 1870 he visited the tribe to confirm the story. Allegedly the men were blamed for the death of a Shivwit squaw.
