Clarence Arthur Tappe, 89, of Nimrod, Minnesota, died Wednesday, Febru-ary 8, 2006, at Innovis Hospi-tal, Fargo, North Dakota.

Clarence was born December 16, 1916, in Buchanan, North Dakota, to Henry and Hilda (Ranua) Tappe. He attended school at Districts #32 and #56, completing the 8th grade.
Clarence married Mary Anna McCormick on April 23, 1939. They moved to their home in Meadow Township where they farmed and had their first three children. In 1945 Clarence enlisted into the Air Force and served until all enlistments were suspended at the end of World War II. He returned home to Meadow Township and he and Mary Anna had three more children. In 1959 Clarence moved with his family to Southern California where he worked as an Operating Engineer until 1980.
Clarence had a love of the outdoors, and was especially interested in trees. An expert in forest management, he logged and planted trees on private and public lands. He put in long hours and hard work to support his family, but found time to enjoy horse races, deep sea fishing on the Pacific and fishing in Minnesota and Canadian lakes and rivers. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, Operating Engineers Union Local 12, Nimrod Lutheran Church, and a life member of the American Legion Post #456. In later years he was an avid gardener.
Clarence is survived by four daughters, Maryjean (Ron) Fontenot of Cottage Grove, Oregon, Margaret (Patrick) Rathcke of Nimrod, Minnesota, Rhoda (Lyle) Metteer of Nimrod, and Ruthe Tappe of Nimrod; three sons, Clarence (Bud) Tappe Jr. (Renee) of Menahga, Minnesota, Jerald Tappe (Pat) of Hisperia, California and John Tappe of Laguna Hills, California; one brother, LeRoy (Gail) Tappe of Wadena, Minnesota; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary; five sisters, Hilma, Louise, Irene, Leona and Ester; seven brothers, Arve, Jack, Emil, Lester, LeRoy, Walter and Jerome.
His funeral was held on Sunday, February 12, at Nimrod Lutheran Church in Nimrod with Pastor Raymond Hendrickson officiating. Jayne Koskiniemi served as organist and accompanied Ray Seibert as he sang "In the Garden" and "In the Sweet By and By." Congregational hymns were "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Abide with Me." Pallbearers included Clarence Tappe Jr., Jerald Tappe, Patrick McCormick, Margaret Rathcke, Rhoda Metteer, Ruthe Tappe, Maryjean Fontenot and John Tappe.
