Gaza was my Grandfather, my mom's dad, whom I never met.
I have been told I look a lot like him, and we have some similarities.
Grandpa was born to Hungarian immigrants. He was one of four children born to Steven Bodnar, and one of seven children born to Mary Mate. Mary was married to Steve Bollo previously, and had 3 children, before meeting and marrying Steve Bodnar.
Gaza married Lillian Steinke on January 16, 1940. They had a daughter, Shirley in 1941; my mother, Sharon in 1945; and were blessed with a bonus baby, Shereen in December of 1957.
He was a mechanic and just loved tinkering with things. My mom has told me many stories but one we always laugh about is when he began experimenting with Christmas tree 'flocking', when they 'paint' the trees crazy colors. She says she remembers coming home and finding some god-awful looking Christmas trees in their home.
Gaza really enjoyed fishing. One of the last photos taken of him was from January of 1976, he was ice fishing. My mom remembers a lot of partying and booze. Always a good time when family got together. His best buddy was his sister's husband, Joe.
He died early, at only 59. My aunt Joyce says clogged arteries run in the family. Possibly causing his apparent heart attack.
He left behind his wife, Lillian; daughters, Shirley, Sharon (Erickson), and Shereen (Peters); Two grandchildren who adored him, and four more grandkids to come.
