Horatio was the 3rd of 7 children born to Robert Havens (1759-1817) and Alice Preston Havens (1773-). Moved to Franklin County in 1812 and to city of Columbus in 1814 where he was educated. After first married lived near Delaware Ohio and owned a farm and saw mill situated on a River and also a tract of timber which was made into lumber. In 1865 moved to Otto Township, Kankakee County, Illinois. He was a millwright and farmer.
November 22, 1827 in Darby, Madison, Ohio he married Sarah Norton Hard. They had 9 children: Reuben, Lydia, Horatio, Ralph, Mary Alice, Elisha E., Robert, Adeline, and Ansel D.
