Son of George and Sarah Brown Thomason.
Married Martha Ann Pyle, daughter of Abner, Jr., and Naoma Faires Pyle 27 March 1873 at Highland, Madison Co., IL.
Primary profession was photographer; had a studio at Louisiana, MO, for many years. Opened a studio in St. Louis at about the time of the World's Fair (1904), at which time the family moved to a farm in St. Jacob Township that Martha's parents had given her, there being a direct railroad passenger connection via the Pennsylvania Railroad between St. Jacob and St. Louis at that time.
Both James and Martha died on the farm in St. Jacob Township.
