Primary profession was photographer; had a studio at Louisiana, MO, for many years. Opened a studio in St. Louis at about the time of the World's Fair (1904), at which time the family moved to a farm in St. Jacob Township that Martha's parents had given her, there being a direct railroad passenger connection via the Pennsylvania Railroad between St. Jacob and St. Louis at that time.
Both James and Martha died on the farm in St. Jacob Township.
