Daniel was born January 11, 1756 in Litchfiled County, Connecticut. He served in the revolutionary War. He was with the 13th Regiment of Militia at New York in 1776 in Capt Hitchcock's company. He was a private and arrived in camp August 16, 1776. He was discharged September 9, 1776. He married Elizabeth Campbell or Cammeran on September 5, 1782. They had five children, the first three born in Southbury and the last two in Fairfield, Herkimer County, New York. Elizabeth died in 1819 in Fairfield and Daniel and most of the children moved to Homer Cortland, New York. Daniel died there February 22, 1851 and is buried in the East Homer Cemetery. Mary was born about 1790 and married a Mr. Wood.

Elizabeth was born about 1794 and married Dr. Elijah Hanchett.


Nathaniel was born 15 Jun 1798 and married Jerusha Macomber.

Sarah was born 1802 and was living with her sister Mary in 1860 in Fairfield unmarrieD


The Battle of Long Island, an engagement of the American Revolution, fought on Aug. 27–30, 1776. After the British abandoned Boston on March 17, 1776. General Washington moved his army to New York City, believing it to be the next point of attack. On August 22, the British transported an army of 32,000 from Staten Island across the Narrows to Long Island. Washington knew that to defend New York, he must hold Brooklyn, just across the East River on Long Island. Accordingly, he moved some 7,000 men to increase the Brooklyn forces to about 19,000. Daniel Durkee also fought in the Battle of Long Island.
