Berry James Summerour is the son of John Summerour Sr. and Margaret "Peggy" Berry. He married Mary L. "Polly" Vineyard about 1853 in Georgia.
Berry James Summerour was born in Walton County, Georgia, November 10, 1829; died February 10, 1905; buried at Selma Cemetery, Bowie, Montague Co., Texas.

He married in Gwinnett Co., Georgia, November 26, 1850, Mary L. “Polly” Vineyard, daughter of Narcissa Nancy “Ninnie” Dillard (b. GA 1803; liv. GA 1850, d. Gwinnett Co., GA)63 and Allen B. Vineyard (b. GA May 1804; d. Gwinnett Co., GA, Dec 21 1849). Polly was born in Georgia August 19, 1832; died of a fractured hip near Bowie, Montague Co., Texas, July 29, 1922, aged 89y, 11m, 10d; buried at Selma Cemetery, Bowie, Montague Co., Texas, July 29, 1922.

He enlisted in the Confederate States Army in 1862 at age 33 and served first in 41st Regiment of Georgia and then from March 1862 to November 1864 as a Private in Co. D, 2nd Regiment, Georgia Calvary, the “Cracker Cavaliers”. He deserted in 1864 to go home and protect his and his brother’s families from the Union forces under General Sherman.

They left Georgia and moved after 1873 with children Susan Mae, James Berry, William D., and George W., to Bowie, Texas, settling in the famous “Red River Valley” before 1880.
They are listed in the 1870 US Census in Brooks, Grayson Co., Georgia, as Benj (or Berry) Summerour, 41, Farmer; Mary L., 36; Elizabeth, 18; Susan, 11; Berry, 5; William D. 3; John L., 1; all born in Georgia. Adjacent listing was his daughter N.S. Palmer and her husband G.W. Palmer.
They are listed in the 1880 US Census in Grayson Co., Texas, as Benjamin J. Summerour, 52, b. Georgia ca 1828, Farmer; Mary L., 47, b. GA ca 1833; Susan M., 21, b. GA ca 1859; James B., 15, b. GA ca 1865; William H., 12, b. GA ca 1868; John A. 11, b. GA ca 1869; George W., 7, b. GA ca 1873.
