William James Appleby, Jr. was born 1779 in Hopewell Twp., Cumberland Co., Pennsylvania to William Appleby (c 1742-1807) and Elizabeth "Nannie" McKeehan (1749-1780), both of whom were born in Ireland. William was one of three brothers (James and John were the others) who immigrated prior to the American Revolution; William served as a Private for Pennsylvania in that war. Following the death of Nannie in Cumberland Co., in 1787 William married Agnes "Nancy" McCurdy and moved his family to Virginia, then to Georgia. In November 1807, his will was probated in Tennessee. Nancy is reported to have died in Jackson Co., Georgia in 1829.
