He was educated in the Greenville Military Institute. He was a progressive and successful farmer, owned a good home and valuable farm near Woodruff. He married Lou V Wright on 9 June 1885 in Woodruff.He was the father of six children. Vera Corrine b. 18 Dec 1885 d 19 Sept 1880, Annie Barksdale , James Downs b. 12 Oct 1889 d. 24 June 1915, John Boyd Clara Rebecca and Thomas Wright.He died at age 58 years. Virginia b 22 May 1908 d.23 Aug 1908. Infant born & died May 3 1897. All with dates were buried in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery.
