In 1860, he was a farmer living with and/or working for the Jacob Strine family in Hopewell Township, Cumberland County. He stood 5' 8" tall and had light hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Newville, Cumberland County, August 31, 1864, and mustered into federal service that day in Harrisburg as a private with Co. H, 202nd Pennsylvania Infantry. Falling ill, he was hospitalized in the military facility at York and discharged from the service by surgeon's certificate, per order June 25, 1865.

He married Malinda J. Strohm and fathered Renna (b. 11/08/66). Cause of his death is listed as "pneumonia."
