Auto Accident Proves Fatal to Rev. A. F. Mullins
Rev. Alonzo F. Mullins, former pastor of the United Brethren church, and a resident of Oakdale for the past ten years, died Monday night in the hospital at Modesto, where he was taken on Thanksgiving day following an automobile collision near Elk Grove. Mr. Mullins was in a car with Wm. Crouch, son of Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Crouch of Leitch Colony, the two being enroute to Woodland, where they were conducting evangelistic services, after spending Thanksgiving with their families here. A car in which were a number of gypsies, and driven by Miller Adams, a member of the band, crashed into the Crouch car when Adams attempted to pass another car. Crouch was almost off the road when hit by the Adams car. Both Crouch and Mullins were brought back to Oakdale, and the latter was taken to the Modesto hospital. He was suffering from internal injuries which caused his death. Young Crouch escaped with minor cuts and bruises. W. E. Verson, justice of the peace of Elk Grove has issued a warrant for the arrest of Adams, who it is reported, is being held awaiting investigation. Mr. Mullins was a native of Indiana, born 49 years ago. He came to California and Oakdale about ten years ago, serving here as pastor of the United Brethren Church. For a time after his retirement he was employed by the H. A. Stowe garage as a car salesman, later returning to the ministry as an evangelist in the U. B. church. Mr. Mullins was a man of strong convictions, honest and of the highest integrity. He was a kind father, a splendid husband, and his death comes as a terrible blow to the wife and six daughters. They are Mrs. Maud Mullins, and Barbara, Betty, Aletha, Martha and Nonda, all of Oakdale, and Mrs. Lucille Trueblood of Muncie, Indiana. Funeral services will be held this afternoon at two o’clock from the Community Methodist church.
