Shirley, age 79, of Richland Center and formerly of Beloit, passed away on Tuesday at her residence. She was born the daughter of Edward & Florence Butterfield. Shirley was united in marriage with Clarence D. Burton on July 11, 1947. Shirley took great pride in her beloved beagles, Brett and Bart. She loved to feed and watch the birds and even enjoyed making pets of the squirrels. She loved a mean hand of hearts, a vicious game of euchre and a hot round of Yahtzee, and when no one else was around for her to beat at one of these, you could always count on an ongoing game of solitaire. She was skilled in the kitchen, and enjoyed teaching her grandkids how to bake, cook and make the best grape jelly. She loved to sew, do needlepoint and crochet, all while listening to her favorite classical country artists. Survivors include two children, Vicky (Richard) Brodie of Janesville, WI and Clarence Michael (Holly) Burton of Richland Center; four grandchildren: Dannel Hovland, Leona (Bob) Wightman, Rick (Kathy) Hovland and Tammy (George) Gilbert; 10 great-grandchildren: Kyle, Steve and Samantha Wightman, Tyler, Katie, Jack, Claire and Joey Hovland & Charles and Thomas Gilbert; brother, Gene Butterfield of Beloit, WI; brother in-law, Donald Burton of Janesville, WI; and daughter in-law, Joyce Burton of Beloit, WI; and longtime and beloved friend, Hilda Hangenston. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Clarence D. Burton; her son, Stephen Paul Burton; granddaughter, Paula Louise Burton; and her sister, June Newkirk. Funeral services were held at Pratt Memorial Chapel.
