Ethlyn was born in Oxford, Massachusetts in 1895. In 1908, when she was about 12 years of age she moved to California with her father, sister and brother-in-law after the death of her mother. She married Elmer M Gorsline in 1916 in Los Angeles. Her daughter Ethlyn Gertrude (Gorsline) Barneby was born in 1918 in Wasco, CA and her son, Gary (Elmer Reuben Gorsline) in 1920 in Arroyo Grando, CA. A second son, Alan, was born in 1934 in Lancaster. Elmer and Ethlyn lived in Lancaster, CA in 1924 while Elmer had a job keeping cattle out of the artisian wells west of town. In 1926 they purchased ten acres of land which they developed into a chicken ranch and built an adobe home on it. In the early years they had no running water and no toilet in the house, but electricity came about 1935. In addition to raising chickens they also took care of boys who were wards of the County Courts. They usually had three boys at a time. Over the years they housed a total of 38 boys.
