He graduated from Toulon High School and from the University of Illinois. He taught vocational agriculture, dividing the day between Smithville and Ellettsville schools from 1938 to 1942.
In August of 1942 he joined the Navy and spent 4 years in the South Pacific stationed at a base hospital on the New Hebrides Island as Chief Pharmacist Mate. Coming home from service in 1946 he then moved to Lapel in Madison County, teaching there for 28 years and retired in 1975. While there he was in charge of 4-H and also had a strong F.F.A. chapter with demonstration and judging teams winning all over the state and national contests. While in Madison County he was active in the Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation, Madison County Retired Teachers and all other agriculture related organizations. He was also on the Lapel-Frankton School Board for 16 years. He raised registered Suffolk sheep and Toggenburg dairy goats.
He was a member of the Indiana Dairy Goat Association, Madison County Retired Teachers, and Monroe County Retired Teachers.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Robert St John, Samuel St John and Jack St John; and Granddaughter, Andrea Joan St John.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine DeWar St John of Ellettsville; Son, Fred St John, Jr. (Teresa) of Ellettsville; Daughter, Millie St John Maxwell (Brian) of Cicero; Sister, Elizabeth Arnold of Wyoming, IL; Grandchildren, Christopher Butch Cain (Tammy) of Ellettsville, Kristen Kendall Tipton, Kami Penwell, Cicero (Joe), and Evan Castor of Indianapolis, and Ben St John of Lafayette; Three Step-Grandchildren, Jennifer, Maggie, and Wes Daniel; Ten Great-Grandchildren, Kaliegh and Spencer Cain, Collin, Conner, Callie and Carter Kendall, Ricque, Jacob, Mitchael and Maddey Penwell, Caitlin and Chelsea Rogers, and Step-Granddaughter, Ellie Bernson; Special Care Giver, Tammy Cain.
Funeral Services will be held at 12:00, Thursday, October 20, 2005, at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville with Brother Cletis Ellett officiating. Interment will follow at Chambersville Cemetery with military honors. Friends may call on the family, Wednesday, October 19, 2005, from 4-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
