Charles "Charlie" Sommers, age 86, died peacefully Sunday, August 9, 2009, at Brandon Nursing Home and Rehab.

He was born on May 9, 1923, in Yarmouth, Maine. After his Army service in the Signal Core in Alaska during World War II, Charlie moved South where he later completed a degree at Millsaps College and graduate studies at Mississippi State University.

On Christmas Eve 1959, he married his sweetheart, Julia Ann Combest; in 1965, their daughter, Ann Lavada, was born. For 26 years, Charlie worked as a Petroleum Geologist with Gulf Oil, retiring in 1979. Following stints in Exploration Management, Charlie retired to enjoy activities through Morrison Heights Baptist Church (MHBC). There he participated in the senior choir, as Sunday School teacher, as committee member, as Past President of the seniors group and as the newsletter writer.

Charlie served as Past-President and Past-District Governor of Sertoma of Jackson and as a Past-Commander of the Clinton VFW Post 3685. He enjoyed volunteering at the Clinton Nature Center where he donated his extensive rock collection for public viewing. Charlie was an avid bowler, winning numerous Senior Olympics medals.

Visitation is today from 5-7 pm, and 10 am Wednesday, August 12, 2009, at Lakewood Funeral Home, funeral services are 11 am Wednesday at Lakewood chapel with interment following in Lakewood Memorial Park.

He was predeceased by four siblings.

Charlie is survived by his wife, Julia Sommers of Brandon; daughter, Ann Sommers of Flowood; a stepbrother, Ben Cheney of Freeport, Maine; and many extended family and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to MHBC Legacy of Hope or the Baptist Children's Village.
