Johnnie Mae Thomas was one of six children born to John and Maggie Thomas on 25 Dec 1899. Little is known about Johnnie's father due to the absence of the 1890 census and his passing away prior to the 1900 census. Johnnie's mother, Margaret "Maggie" Harper, was born in June 1871 to Elijah David & Frances Catherine "Fannie" (Bryant) Harper. John Thomas and Miss Maggie Harper married on 21 Sep 1890 in Bibb County, Georgia, presumably Macon as that is where Maggie's family lived.

Whether Johnnie's father John was living when she was born in unknown. On 01 June 1900 when the census is taken, Maggie is a 28 year old widow, living with her recently widowed father Elijah Harper, and raising three children. By 01 June 1900 Johnnie's mother has buried three children (names unknown) and her husband. Johnnie is surrounded by family on her street. Johnnie's oldest sister is Ida Lee Thomas(1895-1975) who marries William Morgan Oswald in 1912.

Johnnie also has a brother, Willie David Thomas who was born in June 1898. Sadly, I wonder if epidemic hits Macon in 1902. In the month of February 1902, within a few days of each other, Johnnie loses her three year old brother Willie and her nine month old cousin Jessie. Johnnie is two years old.

On 14 Mar 1904, Johnnie's mother marries Taylor Jackson Wilson. Taylor is the brother of Maggie's sister-in-law, Mary (Wilson) Harper, wife of Maggie's brother William. Johnnie is blessed with three more brothers:
*Charles Bernard (1906-1958) who marries Dollie Mae Skipper (1906-1947)
*Carl Eugene (1909-1931)
*Paul James (born 1912)

During the 1910 census, Johnnie is living two doors away from her friend Lillie Beatrice Ward. In 1912, Johnnie's sister Ida marries and leaves the home. On 18 Jan 1917, Johnnie's stepfather Taylor passes away. Maggie is widowed a second time and is raising four children and again living with her widowed father.

On May 20, 1920, Johnnie is a pallbearer for her childhood friend Lillie Beatrice Ward (1895-1920; Find A Grave Memorial# 42352298) who passes away from tuberculosis.

On August 13, 1922, Johnnie Mae is one of the twelve finalists selected by the Macon Telegraph newspaper to be Miss Macon, one of the cities most beautiful girls who will then compete in a beauty tournament in Atlantic City, New Jersey. No other article appeared for Johnnie Mae in a search on GenealogyBank.com so I assume she did not win.

Sadly, Johnnie Mae passes away on 24 Jan 1924 at the age of 24 from tuberculosis. She did not marry and did not have children to the best of my knowledge. She is buried in the Harper-Wilson family plot of Cedar Ridge Cemetery (2F10 & 2F11).

None. Her grave is covered by an large unmarked rectangular cement marker. Information came from several of Johnnie's cousins, including my grandmother, over several decades, as told to them all their lives. LFC, 06 Feb 2013.
