Cyrus H. Miller was born in Medina county, Ohio, 8 October 1847, died at Grand Island, 2 March 1920, aged 72 years, 4 months, 24 days. When just a lad he went to Wisconsin with his parents, residing there until he grew up.
He was married to Elizabeth Hendricks in 1868. Two years later they came to Hamilton county, Nebraska, taking a homestead near Aurora. Here they lived until about 35 years ago when they came to Custer county, residing here until his death. They moved to Broken Bow into the present home some eleven years ago. Six children were born to them; Amos J., Cyrus Owen, both of Broken Bow; Mrs. C. S. Lawrence of Alda, Nebraska; Mrs. C. E. Green of Simpson, Colorado; B. E. Miller of Broken Bow and H. E. Miller of Callaway. These are all living. Twenty-seven grand children have come into the family, three of them having preceded the grandfather to the other world, twenty-four are still living.
There are remaining of his father's family as far as known, two brothers and three sisters. They are Major J. S. Miller at the Home for veterans at Wapaca, Wis., Mrs. Eleanor Smith, Washington D. C., Ernest Miller, Couer D'Alene, Idaho, Mrs. Sarah M. Fitch, Zephyr Falls, Florida, and Mrs. John Walingford, Langley, Wash.
Mr. Miller served from 27 March to 4 May 1865 as a private in Co. K, 51st Wis. Inf. Vol. as a substitute for his brother in law, Harmon Stoddard. He was a member of C. C. Wasburn Post No. 98 G.A.R. at Broken Bow.
Mr. Miller was a man highly respected in this community. His character and integrity have commended him to his neighbors and friends. He was well aware of his condition and seemed most to wish to make it as gentle a blow as possible to his faithful wife at home, whom he always affectionately called "Mother." He re-affirmed his life long belief in God and asked that his funeral be simple and brief.
