SENTINEL NEWS OBITUARY – 01/29/1997
Annibale Biagi came from Italy in 1914 to settle in Shelbyville where he started a fruit business. He later got into the tire business and eventually appliances. His sons, Vincent and Hugh, eventually got into the business too – both at the age of 10. Vincent died after a short illness at age 76 on February 15, 1996. Hugh died unexpectedly at age 75 on January 27, 1997. Hugh Annibale Biagi lived on Shelbyville Road where he and his wife, the former Wilma McCoy, reared 12 children. A native of Shelby County, he was the son of the late John Annibale & Alberta Dubourg Biagi. The Biagi's sold Maytag oil along with appliances in the 1930s and in 1937 brought in Frigidaire and RCA – in fact, Biagi’s sold the county’s first television set: a 10-inch black-and-white around which customers crowded to watch the first show in 1948. Hugh Biagi was recognized by customers by his favorite hobby: smoking a cigar, which was always in the corner of his mouth. He was a member of the Catholic Church of the Annunciation, VFW Post and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. Besides his wife, he is survived by 10 daughters, Patricia Biagi, Ann Houchin, of Shelbyville, IN, Margaret Biagi-Tennill, Janie Watts and Jennifer Biagi, all of Shelbyville, Gretchen Ackerman, Susan Bradford and Natalie Goss, all of Louisville, Teresa Biagi-Ellis of Monterey and Bridgett Garratt of Pittsburgh, PA; two sons, Hugh A. Biagi Jr. of Shelbyville and James Biagi of LaGrange, GA; a sister, Mary Ann Duffy of Shelbyville; three brothers, Joe Biagi of Louisville, Quintin Biagi of Shelbyville and Achille Biagi of Evansville, IN; and 22 grandchildren. The funeral will be 10 a.m. Thursday at the Church of the Annunciation with Father Joseph Batcheldor officiating. Burial will be in Grove Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday at Shannon Funeral Home. Expression of sympathy may be donations to the Church of the Annunciation Project Gabriel.
