Brief excerpts from Heritage Quests Revolutionary War Pension files for Seth Hills from John Hills

Seth listed a personal worth of $44.37. He states that he was unable to provide for himself due to infirmity and rheumatism. His household consisted of a wife Karine aged 59 who had not been able to be of assistance for more than 20 years and a daughter age 23 years living with them.

The case went into a survivorship proceeding. Karine Hills submitted an affidavit 29th Sept 1838 from Vernon, Oneida Co., NY saying that she, aged 76, was the wife of Seth Hills. She had married Seth 17 July 1787 at Goshen, Conn. He died 17 Feb 1836 (1826) at Vernon but had received a pension and that she was entitled by law to a survivor's benefit. Willard Gaylord , town clerk, of Goshen provided an affidavit and produced records from Goshen as to the marriage of Seth Hills and Karine (Goodwin) Hills

Subsequently, Anna Holmes of Rochester, Monroe Co, NY submitted an affidavit saying that she was the only child of Seth and Karine (Goodwin) Hills. She states her mother Karine had died 24th Sept 1849. That her mother had received a pension of $40 per year as a soldier's surviving spouse. That she Anna was entitled to further pension rights under the Act of July 1st 1849.

Comments of Susan Kimes Burgess regarding the pension information: "I believe the daughter listed as living at home and 23 in 1821 is Fanny Hills not Anna Hills, who was married with a family of 8 or 9 children in 1821. Fanny died in 1844 at the age of 47 and would have been 23 or 24 in 1821. It appears that Fanny may not have married since she is listed in the Marcus and Anna (Hills) Holmes bible as Fanny Hills upon her death. Wife Carine's age of 59 in 1821 jives well with her birth listing in the same bible of June 6th, 1761. Fanny Hills and Edmund Hills both died in 1844 so Anna (Hills) Holmes was the only surviving child of Seth Hills when Anna applied for pension rights after their mother, Carine/Karine, died in 1849."
