After arriving in St. Louis, Eliza contracted typhoid fever. Her father, wanting a family representative in Utah, had her promise that she would go to Utah. She recovered and, in 1852, traveled to Utah with the James J. Jepson Company.
On 14 Dec. 1852, at Salt Lake City, Eliza married William Wilford Allen. William's wife and son had died on the voyage to America the previous year (1851). Ironically, they were passengers on the ship, "Ellen", at the same time as Eliza and her family were.
William & Eliza had nine children, together.
