Samuel M. Fortner was a son of William Clark Fortner(1824-1877) and Nancy C. Ayres (1832-1918) He was a grandson of John Gresham Thoret Ayres and Susannah Jones. He was the husband of Willie Frances Ayers (1868-1943) who died in Los Angeles California and was a daughter of John H. Ayres (1838-1900) and Mathilda A. White. John H. Ayres was a son of John Gresham Thoret Ayers and Susannah Jones.
