She was born in San Antonio on October 5, 1889, and was a descendant of one of the thirteen Canary Island families who founded San Antonio in 1735. Her late husband Major General Hugh J. Gaffey, held a command in General George Patton's campaigns in North Africa, Itald and Germany, Gaffey led the Fourth Armored Division through the enemy lines to rescue General McAuliffe and his men who had been encircled by German forces at Bastogne. He was later Commander of Fort Knox, Kentucky.
Mrs. Gaffey has been a resident in Austin since his death in 1946. She was a member of St. Austin's Catholic Church and the Austin Army Wives Club.
She is survived by a daughter, Eleanor Ann Ford Little (Mrs. Lewis Little), grandchildren, David G. and Laura Ford of Austin, Ann Ford Parrigin (Mrs. Paul Parrigin), of Lewisville, Texas, Cynthia Ford Brown (Mrs. Scott Brown) of New Braunfels, Texas, and great grandchildren, Hunter and Lee Ann Ford, Trace and Colton Parrigin, and Ashley, Josh, Callie, & Tanner Brown; nephews John C. Phillips and Nash Phillips; niece, Annette Sadler; and grand nephews and nieces.
