GALESBURG -- Marcellus Marc "M.M." Alters, 72, of 897 Lilac Lane died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7, 1999, at his home.

Born May 4, 1926, in Rushville to Clifford and Corene Ellis Alters, he married Betty Edwards on July 2, 1950, in Rushville. She survives.

Also surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Cheryl Alters) Jamison of Santa Fe, N.M., Mrs. John (Myrna) Richard of Union, Mo., and Mrs. John (Julie) Brueggeman of Greensboro, N.C.; one brother, Don of Beardstown; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

He earned a degree in accounting from Gem City Business College in Quincy in 1947. He attended Herzl Junior College in Chicago and Texas A&M University.

He was the service manager at Pickinpaugh Motors in Rushville for 10 years and then was an Internal Revenue Service agent for 30 years. He retired in 1986. He had co-owned Alters Buick-Olds-GMC-Pontiac-Cadillac in Beardstown since 1969. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was chairman of the board of trustees for many years. He was a member of the Noon Lions Club.

He was a former president of the National Association of Federal Employees and a member of the Galesburg city planning commission.

A memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at his church. The Rev. Daniel Siems will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at Hinchliff-Pearson-West Galesburg Chapel. Private burial will be Monday at East Linwood Cemetery.
