Charles Underwood Dies at Age of 76

Charles Underwood, 76, died July 4 at Clarinda, Iowa. He was a former resident of the Rippey-Grand Junction communities, and was engaged in railroad work several years. Funeral services were conducted Thursday, July 7, at the Slininger Funeral Chapel
n Jefferson with the Rev.. Arthur V. Long in charge.
The soloist was Mr. C. C. Charles, who sang "The Lord's Prayer", accompanied by Mrs. Dean Barker.
Pallbearers were Delmar Underwood, I. J. Burk, Al Kupfer, John Stribling, Keith Woltz, and Don Underwood. Interment was in the Rippey Cemetery.
Charles Leonard Underwood, son of Joseph and Mary Roberts Underwood, was born January 25, 1873, at Moravia, Iowa and died at the age of 76 years, 5 months, and 8 days.
When a small boy, he moved with his parents to Washington Township, where he attended the schools around Rippey.
For several years he farmed around Rippey, later working for the railroad.
On March 1, 1894, he married Mabel Crandell at Rippey. They had four children.
Later they lived at Grand Junction until 1905 when they moved to West Des Moines, where he continued working for the railroad.
Mr. Underwood was a member of the Methodist Church of West Des Moines and also a member of the I. O. O. F. Lodge No. 604 of West Des Moines.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother; his wife in 1939; one daughter, Alena; two brothers, William and Byron; and one sister Lilly(?).
Those surviving are his two daughters, Mrs. Hazel Jette of Clear Lake, Iowa and Mrs. Thelma Estensen of Sac City, Iowa; one son, Paul Warner Underwood of West Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, Mrs. Glen Fergus of Clear Lake, Iowa; Jerry Estensen of Sac City, Iowa and Paul L??? Underwood of West Des Moines, Iowa; one brother Alfred Underwood of Scranton, Iowa; four sisters, Mrs. Bertha Morris of Santa Monica, Calif., Mrs. Hattie Burk of Rippey, Mrs. Etta Woltz of Boone, and Mrs. Ruth Krueger of Grand Junction, and other relatives.
