He was born July 13, 1915, at Burlington to Joe and Flora (Shannon) Decker. He was raised in Burlington and later moved to Independence, Mo. He served in the Army during World War II with the 37th Engineer Combat Battalion and landed on Omaha Beach during the D-Day Invasion on June 6, 1944. He was a farmer and stockman before retiring in 1971 and moving to Emporia. His passions were his family and hard work.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, all in Emporia.
He married Lucille Geiger on April 15, 1941, at St. Mary's Church in Independence, Mo. She died July 31, 2002. After she died, he lived for five years at Gansel House Assisted Living in Independence and lived at Presbyterian Manor for two years.
Survivors include a daughter, Cathy Likes of Elk City; two sons, Kenneth Decker of Westwood and Marvin Decker of Altamont; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lester Decker of Burlington; and a sister Hazel Ridpath of Wichita.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Mays; and three brothers, Art, Clarence and Virgil Decker.
The service will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Burlington. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery in Olpe, with military honors.
