Guy Merrick was born November 8, 1930, in O'Donnell, TX, to Thelma and Robert Merrick and died August 5, 2009, in Lubbock, TX.� Mr. Merrick graduated from high school in Causey in 1948.� On July 20, 1951 in Portales, he was married to Chris Rogers.� In October of that same year he was drafted to serve in the US Marine Corps.� Following his discharge in 1953, he began driving a truck for Howell Merrick.� In 1960, he moved his family to Elida, and Guy became manager at the Worley Mills grain elevator there.� After about five years, he again started driving trucks, this time for Lucky Moorhead.� In 1980, he moved to Portales, and began driving a propane truck for Bob Strong Oil.� Guy was injured in an accident in 1983, and had been retired since that time.� He was a member of the Elida Methodist Church.
Guy was a very loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather.� In his personal time, he enjoyed making things with his hands.� He liked to do woodworking and make model cars.� He also enjoyed working puzzles.� Guy was very proud of his service in the Marine Corps, and kiddingly reminded his sons that as a former Marine "he could hurt them if necessary."� Fortunately, he never had to!� Mr. Merrick was the oldest living member of the American Legion Post in Elida.
He is survived by Chris Merrick, his wife of more than 58 years; a son, Randy (Edie) Merrick of Shallowater, TX; four grandchildren, Angel Merrick� and Steven (Shanna) Merrick both of Las Cruces, NM, Kerry Winters of Amarillo, TX, and Randal (Carrie) Merrick of Maryville, TN; 8 great-grandchildren, Kearan, Kenzie, Ashliegh, Alyssa and Karissa Merrick and Brandon, Brittney and Amber Hennig; two sisters, Roberta Payne of Portales and Erlene Wallace of Havanah, AR; a sister-in-law, Marcel Merrick of Causey; and numerous nieces and nephews.�
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Hank Merrick; a sister, Dorothy Kirchoff, and by a son, Steven Merrick who died in 1986.
