ADAMS, N.Y. — Glen J. Backus, 98, of Route 11, died Friday afternoon at Samaritan Keep Home, Watertown.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Piddock Funeral Home, Adams, with Rev. Mary Drake, pastor of the Lorraine United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Ellisburg Cemetery. Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Born Jan. 11, 1911, in Antwerp, the son of William and Mary Render Backus, he attended District 13 school in Lorraine. He worked on local farms primarily doing custom work in the Lorraine area.

He married Hazel B. Casler on Dec. 1, 1936.

Mr. Backus hauled milk for Queens Farms in Pierrepont Manor for 16 years. The couple moved to Vermont where he worked as a logger for several years before returning to the area, where he then worked as a forester for Jefferson County, retiring in 1980. Mr. Backus was a tax collector for the town of Lorraine for 24 years. Mrs. Backus died Jan. 8, 2008.

He is survived by a son, Leroy G., Adams; a daughter and her husband, Joyce A. and William Wadsworth, Lorraine; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, one sister and brother in law, Helen and Keith Wilder, Pulaski; and several nieces and nephews.

A brother, Clifton Backus, and two sisters, Corleen Godez and Leatha Little, all died before him.

Mr. Backus was a member of the Lorraine United Methodist Church and the Black River Fiddlers Association, Osceola. He was a former member of the Rebekah Lodge, Lorraine Fire Department for 25 years, Lorraine Grange, Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Boy Scout leader.

He also was a groomer for the Tug Hill snow mobile trails for several years.
